Four Things You Should Know Before Starting A Rice Farm

Rice business is a very lucrative business in Nigeria, but a lot of people shy away from it cause they believe it is very tedious and toilsome. We are not saying it isn’t that stressful, but there are ways to reduce the stress that comes along with it. After much research, we came up with four things to know before starting a rice business.

Choose The Right Varieties Of Rice to Plant:

There are over 40,000 varieties of rice with different growth processes and yields. Choosing the right variety of rice that is suitable for your farmland could help you with a more productive rice harvest.

Choose The Right Land For Your Rice Farming:

You must choose the right land for your rice production. Getting that wrong might mean losses at the end of the day. Not all farmlands are suitable for cultivating rice. You should select a site in ecological zones where rice is grown traditionally. It is also in your best interest to soil-survey your land to know how suitable it is before use. When choosing land, make sure you choose one that is fertile and high in water retention capacity. Also, your choice of land should contain organic matter like loamy soil or slightly acidic clay for the best results.

Control Weed In Your Rice Farm:

Weed is an unwanted plant you cannot avoid on your farmland. A weed is also any plant that grows or reproduces aggressively outside its native habitat. The sooner the first weeding is done, the better. The first weeding should be done within 2 to 3 weeks after its appearance. Do the second weeding 6-7 weeks after the first appearance. Subsequently, weeding can be done if you want to. There are also chemicals you can use to control the weed. Choose the best that works for you.

Plant Your Rice At The Right Season:

You need to put seasons into consideration when starting a rice farm. There are differences in the planting seasons for forest areas and savannah areas. In the forest area; it is best to plant rice in mid-March to mid-April, after at least 3 good rainfall. In the savannah area, rice is best planted around mid-May to Mid-June.
